Entrepreneurship skills Development
Based on economic outcry of youth in Uganda, the management of Uganda Community Based Health Care Association (UCBHCA) a nonprofit organization based in Entebbe, in 2017 initiated a new project called “Uganda Youth skills development project” a non-formal education and skills training project to equip youth with innovative skills to create viable employment for self and others to generate income not only to finance their health but also develop and reduce dependency on their families which is in line with MDG poverty eradication goal of providing social protection to reduce Vulnerabilities of the poor, including children, youth, unemployed, Persons with Disabilities, indigenous people and local communities and older persons. Currently a total of 105 youth have applied and admitted for training in their own chosen course.
Nature of Courses
The training courses are non-formal taught practically with limited theory requiring trainee to use own hands to get immediate practical outputs/products/goods to meet market demand. Each trainee selects his/her course of study. In the area of enterprise education, students obtain direct experience in applying their technical knowledge in a commercial environment, and can participate in creating and developing a real company that markets its own products to consumers.
Self-employment and micro and small enterprise creation are routes that young people can actively explore and forge their futures. Enterprises are the places where the jobs are. Promoting a positive enterprise culture is only way to facilitate youth employment.
The program is aligned with the Directorate of Industrial training (DIT) BTVET Ministry of Education Uganda in a partnership arrangement whereby the DIT technical team which will supervise the trainees during the course and also set exams which will be given at end of the term. Each trainee will sit exams both practical and theory from Ministry of Education and when passes is given a certificate from Ministry of Education. At the end of the training course each trainee will develop a plan to start his/her business and will be followed up by course trainers during the first six month to support the trainee technically to be able to take off.
